Boxing is one of the sports that continues to gain in popularity as more and more people discover how physically and mentally beneficial it can be along with providing a great deal of fun. This sport appeals to both men and women and various age groups. Whether you are just hoping to get in better shape or you would like to really get into it and perhaps compete, there are some general guidelines that can assist you.

Keep in mind that learning to be a good boxer takes more than acquiring a good pair of boxing gloves and some type of punching bag or punching dummy. Along with desire, it takes commitment, discipline and a positive mental attitude to become proficient at boxing. It is a strenuous activity that requires a body that is strong and agile. Lifting weights is another important part of the equation and another area in which one must start slowly and increase gradually. Lifting heavy weights at a slow pace will tend to build up muscles while lifting lighter weights for a longer period of time (more repetitions) will improve strength.

Using a punching bag for training is strongly recommended as is finding a partner that you can spar with. While it is not absolutely necessary to train in a gym, there are obvious benefits if you can. There are typically other people around who can train with you which makes it a lot more fun and also makes the training time seem to pass a lot more rapidly
